University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Pam Bowers-Voros
Rarely do science and mythology converge, but a new McKissick Museum exhibit captures the two in a series of paintings by University of South Carolina studio art professor Pam Bowers-Voros. Titled A Sense of Wonder: Works by Pam Bowers-Voros, and on view through Jan. 19, 2008, the exhibit explores how natural forms, mostly animals and plant life, have been explained through myths, legends and science. In addition to her oil-based paintings on canvas and board, Bowers-Voros' works include cyanotype, a printing process that results in a cyan-blue print.
One painting in the exhibit depicts a snake in a glass jar. "The scientific inquiry of the specimen is very clear," said Jason Shaiman, curator of exhibits at McKissick Museum. "However, the mythological connection is more ambiguous. The snake was featured in many legends in reference to fertility. Snakes were incorporated into many cultures where the creature was seen as a source of great wisdom and was considered almost god-like."
Preserved specimens represented in Bowers-Voros paintings also are included in the exhibit. "Taking these specimens out of their natural world and putting them on display as scientific objects of research shows how artists throughout history have looked to the natural world for inspiration and understanding," Shaiman said.
