Art Institute of Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Jan-Ru Wan

The Guinan Gallery of The Art Institute of Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, is presenting Dormant Thought, an incredible array of fiber media by Chapel Hill, NC artist, Jan-Ru Wan, on view through Oct, 30, 2008.

Wan is recognized as a leading artist in the installation field. Her pieces, which are quite large, "extend" off walls and are suspended. Her work, KuanYin... observing the innervoice, is 9 by 15 by 2 feet and is made of "woven ikat and wax thread, rusted bells encased in wax, and printed mirror."

Wan offered the following about her work, "As a visual artist mainly working with fiber media, my artworks are characterized by the intricate details of the texture and surface, and by the usually large scale to create a sense of wonder and awe. The detailing in the fabric is complex, repetitive and made up of many inter-related parts. It engages the eye, indulges the mind, and encourages one to reflect on the essence of the work. The images, the textures, the objects and the colors surround the audience. They can feel a close association with the work."

Wan graduated from the Tainan Professional School of Home Economics in Taiwan in 1987. She earned a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin. Since 2004, she has been an assistant professor in the School of Art at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.
