Beet Contemporary Craft & Functional
Art in Charlotte, NC, features Works by Jeff Pender
Beet Contemporary Craft & Functional Art
in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit,
New Works by Jeff Pender, on view from Oct. 3 -31, 2008.
Pender's exhibition consists of recently created wall pieces and free standing sculpture that convey a ceremonial, ritualized esthetic. His work is unique in form and surface design, often appearing to be metal, wood or bone until closely examined. He explores the possibilities of terra sigillata, copper-iron patina and wood stain with stunning results. Pender's sculptures are intriguing and sensual; they delight the eye and imagination.
Pender writes, "Mystery moves. Discovery waits. It is through the ritual of personal discovery that we gain an intimate knowledge of our selves and our world. My work seeks to convey a sense of discovery and invite discovery."
Pender received his BA in Ceramic Art, cum
laude, from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and his MFA
in Ceramic Art from University of Florida in Gainesville. He has
exhibited widely in the United States including American Craft
Council shows and Artspace in Raleigh, NC.
Pender was chosen as an affiliate artist and awarded an 11 month
residency at the McColl Center for the Arts in Charlotte. He has
received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities,
the Arts and Science Council, and the Cabarrus Arts Council, and
his work is in many private and public collections including the
Mint Museum in Charlotte. Pender has been a faculty member in
the art department at Central Piedmont Community College since
2002. His work is currently featured in the 7th Street Project
in Charlotte, sponsored by the McColl Center of Art.
