October Issue 2008

Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, Features Works by 14th Century Artist, Tommaso del Mazza

The Museum and Gallery at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, will present the exhibition, The Twilight of a Tradition, on view through Dec. 7, 2008. This exhibition is the first exhibit to concentrate on the works of the 14th century Florentine artist, Tommaso del Mazza.

Imagine working as an artist at the dawn of the Renaissance. As the old and familiar Gothic traditions fade into twilight, innovations, such as those introduced by Masaccio, emerge on the horizon - such as the use of linear perspective in paintings which helped create new ways of representing real physical structures and the switch to using oil on canvas as the medium of choice, instead of tepera paint on wood. Tommaso del Mazza lived and worked at such a time. This exhibition will offer representative works from each phase of his career to hallmark the tradition he followed.

A significant component of the exhibit involves the examination of two panels by del Mazza at the Museum and Gallery at Bob Jones University alongside a work from the J. Paul Getty Museum entitled, Annunciation, believed by art scholars to form a complete triptych by del Mazza; and yet, scientific analysis questions such a close relationship.

Museums contributing to this exhibition include: Birmingham Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, Musée du Petit-Palais (Avignon, France), Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University, and The Walter Art Museum.

On Nov. 6, 2008, the Museum & Gallery will offer the symposium - Tommaso del Mazza and the Florentine Tradition. Join M&G for a day of scholarship in the Florentine tradition of painting. Symposium speakers include Barbara Deimling, University of Syracuse in Florence, Italy; Carl Strehlke, Curator of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; John Nolan, Curator of the Museum & Gallery at BJU, and others. Call M&G's Events Coordinator at 864/770-1331 for more information and to register.

An exhibition catalog entitled, Discovering a Pre-Renaissance Master: Tommaso del Mazza, will be available. Scholarly essays and exhibition entries give in-depth insights into the work of Tommaso del Mazza and the context of late Trecento paintings in Florence, Italy.
