Features Works by Martijn van Wagtendonk
Clemson
University in Clemson, SC, will present the installation, Headway,
by Martijn van Wagtendonk. The exhibit will be on view in the
Lee Gallery, located in Lee Hall at Clemson University, from Oct.
6 through Nov. 12, 2008.
Headway is a sculptural kinetic work hovering six feet above the floor in Lee Gallery. van Wagtendonk explains, "In these works, a calculated study of motion and force is paired with a variety of elements of myth and religion to give the sense of a new philosophy - In the form of an installation, art has the ability to immerse the viewer in a multi-sensory experience. By using this approach, and the implications of a suggested new mythology, the viewers are urged to think about their own convictions and the origins of these notions as we consider and reconsider what we think we know to be true."
van Wagtendonk is Assistant Professor of Art in Studio Foundations at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the University of Georgia. He received his BFA in sculpture at the Fontys Academie voor Beeldende Vorming (Academy for Visual Forming), in Tilburg, The Netherlands, an MFA in sculpture from The Ohio State University, and a second Masters Degree in Experimental Animation from The California Institute for the Arts in Valencia.
Headway is funded by a University of Georgia Research Foundation Inc. (UGARF) Junior Faculty research Grant, and an Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE) Grant premiering in Lee Gallery and leading to a larger installation at the MOCA GA in 2009.
