Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Eva Carter

Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Intuitive Response, a collection of oil paintings by nationally acclaimed Abstract Expressionist Eva Carter, on view through Oct. 30, 2008.

Carter, who is well known for painterly compositions with bold colors and structures, follows an intuitive path in the creation of this new series. According to Carter, "Intuition is my muse and momentum it calls to action a fearless approach to painting. Each brushstroke is loaded with subconscious decisions and insights." Describing intangible concepts of abstract art won't do justice to Carter's oversized and vivid canvases; these paintings allow a viewer to let go of left-brain analysis and benefit from a purely emotional reaction to the daring colors and spatial connections in her work.

Carter was born on a farm in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee an unlikely place to be exposed to fine art. However, as a teenager on a family trip to New Mexico in 1958, a world of inspiration opened up to her. There she met professional artists and discovered the southwestern landscape that fueled her early work. That trip prompted Carter to study fine art in college and begin an incredibly difficult yet rewarding career.

Over fifty years later, Carter has made an impression on the abstract art world, with solo exhibitions in the Carolinas as well as New Mexico, California, and Colorado. Her work is found in private, corporate, and museum collections throughout the United States. Carter has lived in Charleston since 1977; she paints daily at her Wadmalaw Island studio.
