Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC,
Offers Works by Louise & William Halsey
From Oct. 9 through Nov. 8, 2008, Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, will present the exhibition, Two Halseys: Past and Present. The works include weavings by Louise Halsey, and late works on paper by her father William Halsey, deceased modernist painter from Charleston, SC.
Louise Halsey
Louise Halsey's interest in weaving began from
early childhood. A trip in the 60's with her father to the village
of Oaxaca, Mexico, solidified her growing intrigue with the loom.
After receiving a Hughes Foundation Grant, she returned to the
village in the late 70's and worked among the women there, embroidering
and interacting with the weavers. Louise stored yarn from that
trip to be used in these current tapestries.
Louise states, "My intention in making this series of house
tapestries was not singular. Each of these houses tells a different
story. I wanted to recall my childhood in terms of literally composing
a work based on the place where I lived as a child. I also wanted
to explore ways of representing a house image in terms of art
history. My own art history was as the daughter of two artists
whose early paintings of Charleston were done in a certain style.
I adopted aspects of their approaches. I looked to Paul Klee for
inspiration with his many works using the house. I saw things
of interest in how my elementary art students drew their houses.
I see this series as illustrating stories that are part of my
history. They are personal, reflective, and unlike other work
I have done which has been abstract and thus without recognizable
subject matter. These current works continue my use of strong
colors and my delight in stripes and geometric shapes while venturing
into symbolic terrain with the image of the house at the center."
This is the first show of Louise Halsey's work at the gallery and the first exhibition pairing her work with her father's. William Halsey's work has been represented by Hampton III Gallery since the early 70's.
