Drawing on the collections of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the Hickory Museum of Art, the exhibition, The Spirit of Black Mountain College, features two and three dimensional works of visual art by BMC faculty and students during their tenure at the college, including paintings, ceramics, prints, drawings, photography, and furniture by Anni Albers, Leo Krikorian, Ben Shahn, Robert Motherwell, Elaine de Kooning, Hazel Larsen Archer, and thirty additional artists.

The exhibition, The Eclectic Collection of Howard Campbell, will be on view through Jan. 11, 2009. Howard Campbell, a member of the NC Folk Art Society, is a lifelong collector and a supporter of the arts. Over a period of decades he amassed an eclectic assortment of folk art: traditional and contemporary, anonymous and famous artists, secular and spiritual themes, functional and purely aesthetic. Recently Campbell allowed a large portion of his collection to be sold at auction, with all proceeds benefiting the American Folk Art Museum in NYC. However, like any passionate collector, he could not give everything up and with his assistance the Hickory Museum of Art is pleased to provide a look into the wide and wild world of folk art.

An exhibition of glass works given to the Museum by Sonia and Isaac Luski, and Rose and Abraham Luski, entitled, Born of Fire: Glass from the Museum's Luski Collection, is on view through July 5, 2009. Several styles of glass blowing are demonstrated and feature artists with connections to the prestigious Penland School of Crafts nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. In a recent interview with writer Robin Edgar, Isaac Luski said, "We collect art because we love it. We give it away because we like to share it."

The newly constructed Paul Whitener Gallery, dedicated on Jan. 19, 2008, honors the life and work of the Museum's founder and first director, Paul W. Whitener. It features rotating exhibitions of art created by Paul Whitener from HMA's Collection and through loans, and a short video about Paul Whitener and the Museum he created (produced by Jackson Group Interactive).

The Donnelly and Lail Galleries house works in an open storage format including Southern Contemporary Folk Art. These pieces are not part of a traditional exhibition, but are on view for research, study, comparison and enjoyment. Works in these galleries change regularly.
