October Issue 2008

Mark's Gallery & Workshop in Charlotte, NC, Features Group Exhibit

Mark's Gallery & Workshop in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Iterations, featuring works by Julie Benda, Petra Carroll, Jennifer Parham Gilomen, and Susan Lenz. The exhibition was curated by Sharon Dowell and will be on view from Oct. 3 - 31, 2008.

Jennifer Parham Gilomen received her MFA from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, studied at the Penland School of Craft in Penland, NC, and was a McColl Center for Visual Art resident. The tradition of quilting is an influence as she physically sews into the canvas, but also in the meticulous nature of other processes in her work. Repetition of text and neutral tones are also important, creating simultaneous tension and stillness.

Susan Lenz developed her love of textiles, textures, and cultural diversity through her travels. Her explorations of fabric manipulation convey a feeling of appreciation toward all things rustic, adorned and exotic and are often vehicles for social and historical commentary. Lenz teaches fiber at the Columbia Museum of Art, and exhibits regularly.

Previously a bank employee, Petra Carroll has been surrounded by numbers and repetition for years, giving influence to the obsessive nature of her work. She utilizes found objects and materials in new ways, experimenting with plastic baggies, tissue paper, needles, paper or metal. Carroll graduated from Winthrop University recently and exhibits in the Southeast.

Julie Benda, a recent McColl Center for Visual Art resident, combines her past engineering experience with her visual art career via printmaking. Her imagery concentrates on interruption and obstruction, represented by cast shadows, which are created by obstructed light. Benda was featured in the fall 2008 issue of Studio Visit catalog and has work in the permanent collection of the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
