North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Bulldog Pottery
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, will be presenting an exhibit of works by Bulldog Pottery, located in Seagrove, NC, in the Museum's Nature Art Gallery. Works by Bruce Gholson and Samantha Henneke will be on view from Oct. 3 through Nov. 2, 2008.
Named for their two resident American Bulldogs, Bulldog Pottery specializes in finely crafted ceramics. Since moving to Seagrove in 1997, Gholson and Henneke have developed an extensive following of admirers and collectors, which makes their third exhibit in the Museum's Nature Art Gallery all the more special. Their interest in the natural world and history of science shows in their work and makes them a perfect fit for the Gallery. The natural world is represented in every aspect of their work, with each piece expressing a response to nature in form, coloration and surface design. "We feel that our joint research has been crucial to the development of our work," says Henneke. "We have achieved far more together than we could have separately."
Gholson and Henneke each have a distinctive style but they collaborate on work as well. Gholson is fascinated with fossils, reptiles and insects and many of his forms are decorated with what appear to be snake or fish fossils. Henneke frequently takes images from the garden and re-creates them in glaze on hers. However, they collaborate mostly on developing new crystalline glazes with their newest resembling sparkling snowflakes, dewdrops or raindrops.
Both artists have degrees form the College
of Ceramics, Alfred University, New York and maintain a continuous
schedule of fairs and exhibits.
