Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Rod Wimer and Jean Cauthen

Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, Mixed Company, featuring new paintings by Rod Wimer and Jean Cauthen, on view from Oct. 2 - 31, 2008.

Rod Wimer's new series of Collage Works explore the human form in a variety of settings taken from daily life. He asserts that, "These compositions in acrylic and multi-media collage are all about exploring the human form, particularly the female body, in an urban or interior setting."

Combining a monochromatic palette of nine neutral tones ranging from dark chocolate to ivory white, with infusions of texture from fabrics and handmade papers applied to the canvas, Wimer creates dramatic compositions rich in detail.

This series is a study in contrasts; the detailed drapery featured in the dresses worn by the female figures and the curtains at the windows in the interior scenes highlight the anonymity of the faceless figures at the center of each painting. The textured skin tones of the faceless figures are created by scratching into wet paint with a nail or pencil. In so doing, Wimer captures the beautiful and poetic mystery of strangers in daily life.

Jean Cauthen traveled extensively while growing up, living in New Orleans, the Carolinas and abroad, in Italy. She maintains strong artistic ties to Italy, returning annually to paint the beautiful and unique countryside.
She specializes in landscapes done en plein air; crediting the immediacy of painting on location with allowing her to capture the scene as it happens, giving each painting "a true sense of time and place."

Through her paintings, Cauthen seeks to "honor the rich history of the land while expressing my own unique voice through an unexpected use of color." Her palette of rich, earth tones reflects her commitment to creating works that celebrate the inherent beauty so abundant in nature. Cauthen's skillful brushwork adds texture, imbuing her works with a tactile, atmospheric quality.
