The Light Factory in Charlotte, NC, Features Two New Exhibitions

The Light Factory in Charlotte, NC, is presenting two new exhibitions including: Into the Mystic, featuring photography, sculpture and animation that is completely lit from within, including works by Connie Sullivan, Kit Kube, Michael Wilson, and Heather D. Freeman, on view through Jan. 4, 2009, and The Day of Small Things: Photographs by Michael Wilson, featuring a mid-career retrospective that features portraits of some of today's most important musicians, on view through Jan. 4, 2009.

Into the Mystic features works that exploit and express one of the most essential elements of photography-light. For years, artists have been fascinated with how light is produced, how it is transmitted, and how it can be transformed. Although many photographers have used light in the traditional sense to create photographic prints, others have expanded the process by also incorporating light in the presentation of their work. Many artists have recognized the dynamic quality of movement and kinetic energy often found in the still photograph, and have experimented with a variety of techniques ranging from filmmaking to light sculpture environments.

The exhibit includes the following: Connie Sullivan challenges the conventional definitions of the photograph by expanding the boundaries of the transparency. Photographs taken at different angles are compressed and lit from behind giving the piece a three-dimensional hologram-like quality.

Kit Kube's colorful kinetic light sculptures utilize elaborate set-ups of iron and metal wire to create intricate shadows.

Michael Wilson's snaking arrangements of lightboxes illuminate a photograph transparency using a single lightbulb.

Heather D. Freeman's fabric panels feature photographic art that reveals a digital video display that plays a corresponding animation.

Co-organized by The Light Factory and the Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery (Cincinnati, OH), The Day of Small Things is a mid-career retrospective of the work of Michael Wilson, who creates unique and deeply honest photographs that capture the essence of his diverse subject matter, which includes landscape, urban settings, interiors, and portraits.

The exhibition features a variety of photographic series completed by Wilson during the past twenty years including his ongoing series of musician portraits-many of whom happen to be some of today's most important musical artists, including: Lyle Lovett, Philip Glass, B.B. King, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, The Neville Brothers, Rodney Crowell, John Prine, Loudon Wainwright III, Over the Rhine, Bill Frisell, David Byrne, and many others.

This exhibition was made possible by an Anonymous Gift of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

The Light Factory receives basic operating support from the Arts & Science Council and the North Carolina Arts Council.
