Passion Plays:Recent Works by Matt Cooper

Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, is proud to open the New Year with an exhibition of new works by North Carolina painter Matt Cooper on view through Feb. 6. Cooper continues to challenge us with some of the most impressive Social Realism being painted in the Southeast. He paints in response to the current events in the world and in his immediate environment. His subjects explore topics, which range from drug abuse and racism to international political conflicts. His style of visual commentary follows in the path of American Social Realists such as John Sloan, George Bellows and Reginald Marsh.

Cooper's lush oil surfaces are cast in Baroque light and emotional intensity. His figures are often attenuated and his colors are dissonant, which heightens the Expressionism of his themes. It is Cooper's facility to combine Expressionism and earthy American Realism that gives his paintings a unique and dramatic quality. His carefully composed and skillfully executed paintings evoke contemporary messages that promise to move his viewers as few artists can.

Gallery C has exclusively represented Matt Cooper since 1990.
