January Issue 2001
Showing at Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC
Hodges Taylor Gallery, in Charlotte, NC, continues the celebration of its twentieth season with solo exhibitions of two long-time gallery artists, painters Matt Overend and Robert Stuart. The exhibitions: Matt Overend - New Works, and Robert Stuart - New Abstractions, will be on view Jan. 5 - Feb. 28.
Matt Overend
Matt Overend's exhibition will include both landscape and still life subjects. This South Carolina painter uses still life or landscape as a departure point for his paintings, which are actually abstract, color studies.
Horizontal lines gently interrupt deeply mottled and wide dark swaths with elusive edges. This pattern is repeated and altered, becoming a rhythmic refrain. Edges of color meet and reveal other layers, other colors.
Robert Stuart
Like Overend, Virginia painter Robert Stuart has been known for his light-filled landscape and still life work. In this new series, Stuart has launched into a more abstract style. A band of rectangles form the basis far Stuart's explorations and relate to the color shifts and layers found in the work of American, twentieth century master, Mark Rothko.
Here softened geometry and textured surface evoke an atmosphere of radiating light and ordered calm. His new vision is exemplified in large-scale paintings, using oil and wax medium on canvas as well as small, intimate paintings on paper.
