The Pickens County Museum Of Art Features Exhibit of Works by Elijah Hawthorne, Jr.

The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites one and all to the opening of our year 2001 Season with a very special exhibition at the Pickens County Museum of Art & History in Pickens, SC. On Jan. 13 we present the exhibition Welcome to Elijah's World, featuring the paintings and prints of the African-American artist Elijah Hawthorne, Jr. This entertaining exhibition will continue through Feb. 17.

Elijah Hawthorne, Jr., a native of Greenville, SC, is the oldest son in a sharecropper's family of eleven children. Elijah took an interest in drawing early in his life. His grade and high school teachers, recognizing his abilities, encouraged him to develop his talents by assigning him various art projects. In March of 1985 he picked up a paintbrush for the first time. His instinctive love for the medium is evident in his oil and acrylic works, which express the natural talent of a serious and upcoming artist.

His strong desire to express himself through paintings led to his displaying of work throughout the southeast. The dedication and depth of this artist's work are reflections of his own life experiences, and through his experience come the deepest expressions that are found in his paintings.

Elijah's work may be found in a wide array of corporate and private collections, including former Atlanta "Hawks" Dominick Wilkins and Spud Webb as well as the distinguished poet, Maya Angelou. Welcome to Elijah's World is made possible in part through a grant from The Max & Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.
