January Issue 2001
Print Studio South in Charleston, SC, Features Work by Bea Aaronson
Bea Aaronson, a French citizen living in the
US since 1987, presents an exhibit of monotypes at Print Studio
South Gallery, in Charleston, SC, titled Un Oiseau Qui S'enfuit,
translated as "a bird that flies away." The exhibit
will be on view through Jan. 29.
Aaronson is a self-taught multi media artist, art critic, performer,
published author and independent scholar and has just been chosen
as the 2001 Piccolo Spoleto poster artist. She has earned a BA
in French and art history in Cape Town, South Africa and holds
a MA in french literature from The University of SC in Columbia,
SC. In Aaronson's imagery, the verbal and the visual combine as
abstracted compositions of colors and textures which sometimes
refer to landscape, sometimes are figurative and often are non-referential.
Using the monotype as a vehicle for variations on a theme is often
what her print work is about. Other times the print takes on a
completely separate voice through the addition of collage elements
or paint. "Monotype technique allows immediacy and depth
at the same time." In her exhibit, Aaronson uses this technique
to record "impressions of chaos and loss, trying to recapture
the fleeting moment of departure," hence, a bird that flies
away.
The artist has exhibited her work in the US, Europe and the Middle East, curated exhibits for Piccolo Spoleto, USA, published art reviews for Fiberart magazine and the Charleston Post and Courier and written award-winning poetry.
