Print Studio South Member Exhibit at City Gallery in Charleston, SC
The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of contemporary fine art prints by members of Print Studio South (PSS) from Jan. 9 - 30.
The fine art prints in this exhibit are not the reproductions which are in vogue today but part of a tradition of artists producing original works, conceived and printed by the artists themselves in the medium of etching, lithography, relief prints, silkscreen and monotype.
The Charleston Renassance artists at the turn
of the 20th century who worked in these mediums included individuals
such as Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Alfred Hutty and Alice Ravenel
Huger Smith. They and others came together as the Etcher's Club,
practicing the art of printmaking. A print of this nature is an
image on paper created by individually "pulling" or
passing through the press a plate worked by the artist and a paper
so that the image is passed on to the paper. Fine art prints cannot
be reproduced in editions which number in the thousands, hence
the term "limited edition" has its true meaning.
In the spring of 1991, a group of area artists came together with
a vision for creating a studio for printmaking in the Lowcountry.
This studio became known as Print Studio South. PSS is a community
based, non-profit arts organization dedicated to educating artists
and the public about fine art prints and printmaking techniques.
The facility includes 1500 square feet of studio space available
for rent on a yearly, monthly or weekly basis. As a non-profit
organization Print Studio South includes educational programming
in the form of independent workshops, classes taught through the
Gibbes Museum of Art and an outreach program which hires artists
to work in the after school programs for the Charleston Housing
Authority and area public schools. Print Studio South presents
exhibits in the Print Studio Gallery for members as well as non-members.
