January Issue 2002
Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Features Works by Members of The Other Group
To kick off the New Year, the Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, will feature the work of nine talented artists. The Other Group is a collective of artists from Western North Carolina. The exhibit is sponsored by Gardner Glass Products and will begin on Jan. 3 and run until Jan. 26, 2002.
The Other Group exhibiting members are Andy Atkins of Granite Falls, NC; Victoria Bauer of Newton, NC; Jean Cauthen of Newton, NC; Vae Hamilton of Conover, NC; Deborah Klein & Bobbie Miller of Hickory, NC; Tom Oakley of Lenoir, NC; Will Pilchard of Boone, NC; and Tom Thielemann of Lenoir, NC.
Tom Thielemann is the featured artist of our January exhibition. He resides in Lenoir, and is employed by Gardner Glass Products as Director of Operations over the Creative Images line. Thielemann began showing his work in 1997. His works have been exhibited at a number of reputable galleries. In July 2001, his works were exhibited at the Halpert Biennial at The Catherine J. Smith Gallery at the Appalachian State University in Boone. Also in July 2001, his work was featured at the Spratt Burroughs Gallery in York, SC. May 2001, Thielemann exhibited in the 23rd Annual First Tennessee Bank Juried Exhibition at the Carroll Reese Museum at the East Tennessee State University. In Jan. of the same year Ladders, Hearts, and Nests: Recent Works was exhibited in Charlotte at the Watkins Gallery of Queens College. In late 2000, he received an Honorable Mention Award when he participated in the 23rd Annual Visual Arts Competition held by the Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir.
Thielemann quoted, "The subject matter and imagery, which has become such a personal part of my vocabulary, includes ladders, hearts, birds, crowns and angels. The ladder represents, among many things, the ability to accept challenges and strive toward a more whole existence. The heart holds all things of importance together and symbolizes the one true thing that comes without struggle, love. These images are used in my work as universal symbols representing a higher spirituality and a reason for our place and time. In addition, I use words that correspond to these symbols. Words are printed onto the surface as both a statement about a particular image and as an aesthetic image all its own. It is my intention that the string of symbols apparent in my work will leave the viewer with his or her own personal questions and contemplations about life, love, and creation."
The combination of talents from the members of The Other Group will make this January exhibition a wonderful display of art from the creative minds of residents of Western North Carolina. The Other Group shows together only one to two times each year making this exhibition truly unique to the Wilkes Art Gallery and our community.
