Janaury Issue 2003
Art 1 Gallery in Gastonia, NC, Features Works by Eustace Conway & Annual Photography Exhibit
Art 1 Gallery and Instructional Center in Gastonia, NC, will present the exhibitions, Natural Roots, featuring Gastonia's own, Eustace Conway and the 5th annual Carolina Lens Art. Both will be on view from Jan. 9 through Feb. 21, 2003.
Natural Roots will reveal the many travels of The Last American Man, Eustace Conway who lives outside the hills of Boone, NC, without running water and many of the 20th Century luxuries. Conway, most commonly known as The Last American Man, in his recent autobiography by Viking, a Member of Penguin Putnam, Inc., under that very title shares his travels to many rural countries and remote environments via photographs taken while on these journeys. He has captured the most innocent of subjects and the natural beauty in areas such as Guatemala, Cherokee Mountains, Colorado and the Carolina Foothills.
Featured in this exhibition are the many subtle faces and domestic trades important in surviving in the wilderness. Many hunters and gatherers, cooks, children and women are decorated in their traditional garbs and natural environments, along with landscape images photographed in beautiful color.
Conway will have several speaking engagements throughout Gaston County at local schools and libraries, and his book; The Last American Man will be available for sale and for autographs at the opening of his exhibit on Jan. 9, 2003 at 5:30pm. The exhibition is sponsored by the Carrie E. & Lena V. Glenn Foundation.
"Natural Roots" will be held in conjunction
with Carolina Lens Art, which celebrates its 5th year.
