Janaury Issue 2003
Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Features Exhibition of Works by Florence Thomas
From Jan. 17 through Mar. 7, 2003, the Catherine Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, will host a solo painting exhibition for Florence Thomas.
Thomas, an Ashe County native from Grassy Creek, NC, has been painting and exhibiting her work nationally for seven decades. She began her art career in 1930 as a student at the Moore Institute of Art, Science and Industry in Philadelphia, PA. Thomas took time out to get married, raise a son and a daughter, work a 400 acre cattle ranch and farm, and then resume her art career.
Thomas taught art at Wilkes Community College and she taught private lessons from her country home where some students drove 60 miles to study with her. She works in a variety of media such as oil, watercolor, pen & ink, collage, and pastels. Her unique use of color is seen in a wide spectrum of subjects such as landscapes, portraits, still-lifes, and delightful scenes of farm animals. Working directly from nature, Thomas captures the true color and beauty in everyday scenes.
Thomas presently resides on her farm at Grassy Creek where she still spends most of her time painting.
