Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Outside-In Artists
While many people have different appetites when it comes to art (contemporary vs. the classics, for example), few will argue that it does indeed spark the wonder and fascination within us. It is one of the most widely used forms of therapy and communication.
From Jan. 7-29, 2003, the creative works of
40 artists from the mental health community in the Spartanburg,
SC, area will be on display in the Milliken Art Gallery on the
campus of Converse College. The exhibition will feature a diverse
group of styles and media including paintings, sculptures, drawings,
and mixed media.
The artists are participants of Spartanburg's Outside-In Open
Studio Project. "The mission of Outside-In is to encourage
creativity, dignity, and productivity among members of the mental
health community," said art therapist Nancy Hearon, director
for the program. "Creativity is a vital force that lie within
all of us, and at Outside-In we try to tap into that reservoir
of skills. For many of our participants, art is one of the few
ways to truly share their feelings and thoughts."
