Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.
Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

e.r.l. originals in Winston-Salem, NC, to Feature Visions of Paris By North Carolina Artist Norma Murphy

Well-known artist Norma Murphy's colorful mixed media collages on canvas and watercolors and acrylics on paper will be on display at e.r.l. originals through Feb. 5, 2003.

Visions of Paris, a series of paintings Murphy completed recently while in Paris, will be at e.r.l.'s new location in Winston-Salem's historic West End District. Murphy will be on hand at the reception to talk about her figurative works of art.

Murphy was born and raised in Bethel, a remote and picturesque valley 15 miles west of Boone in North Carolina's tranquil Appalachian Mountains. She began creating as a small girl. Surrounded by rolling hills and lofty trees, Murphy spent much of her time exploring the woods and creeks around her rural home. She was nurtured by her exposure to the elements and retained the aesthetic qualities present in the landscape. These components are visible in her figurative work today. Rich textures and intriguing perspectives are qualities present in all her paintings.

Murphy's style of painting, which includes decorative patterns and colors, is a compilation of Abstract Expressionism, Romanticism, and Fauvism, but the end result is unique to her. She is perhaps best known for her collage technique. She begins by working with loose sketches in watercolor and acrylic. From these she creates large collages using patterned papers and acrylic pigments. The end results are paintings that abound with color and texture and reflect her love of French impressionism and German expressionism.

Murphy holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Appalachian State University where she received both senior and junior honor awards. She also studied art for three years at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, and later studied French Impressionism at Delaware State University.

Murphy's artwork was recently accepted into the archives of the National Museum of Women Artists in Washington DC, securing her status as a treasure of artistic talent and cultural heritage. She has also received many other awards and honors during her 40-year career. She has exhibited at galleries and museums across the southeast, and her works are part of a number of corporate collections, among them Burroughs-Wellcome, Delta Airlines, Glaxo, and Southern Bell.
