Hilton Head Art League in Hilton Head, SC, Presents Annual Student Show and New Works by Joan Marion Grolimond
The Hilton Head Art League Gallery, located in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, is featuring the exhibitions, Student ArtReach 2003, an exhibition of artwork by local high school students, on view from Jan. 9 - 18, 2003, and Colors of Creation, including photographic works by Joan Marion Grolimond, which opens Jan. 21 and continues through Feb. 15, 2003.
Artwork by the extremely talented local students is always a pleasant surprise to all who see it. "The annual Student ArtReach program is one the students really look forward to each year," says Kathryn Ramseur- Riley, an art teacher at Hilton Head Preparatory School. "Students are excited about being able to show their work in a venue outside the school," she adds.
This year's postcard design announcing the show is the work of Cara Ann Alanga, a senior at Hilton Head Prep. Her work is entitled, Profile.
Diane Bass, chair of the Art League's Education Committee points out that the Art League is eager to encourage the work of young artists. "The annual display of artwork by our local young artists is one way in which we support art education in the community," says Diane. In addition, the League offers an annual scholarship to qualified students moving on to studies in the visual arts. Applications for these scholarships are now available and can be acquired by calling Diane Bass at 843/342-6852.
Joan Marion Grolimond hails from western Canada and now lives part of the year in Montreal and winters on Hilton Head Island with her husband, Andre. She owned her first camera at the age of 5. The camera was a Kodak Brownie. Her interest in photography increased as her children became older. Grolimond honed her skills with classes at Concordia University, the Fort Lauderdale Art Institute, and the Winona School of Photography (now in Chicago).
Grolimond had her own black and white darkroom, she ventured into commercial art, photographing horses. Later, she had a portrait studio in Montreal. Now, nature photography is her primary interest. She photographs in various parts of the world, particularly Europe and Africa. Her exhibition will delight viewers with photography inspired by her travels.
"Photography is a way of keeping beautiful images, not only on the inner eye," says Grolimond, "but also for one's viewing pleasure. What can be lovelier than the colors of creation," she adds.
In addition to the featured photographs, the Art League is showing the work of more than 100 of its member artists, in all mediums. The works include original oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels, collages and mixed medium pieces, notecards, jewelry, woodturnings, quality prints, ceramics and pottery.
