North Charleston City Gallery in North Charleston, SC, Features Works by Mark Gadsden and Dorothy Wright
The City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department will present the works of artists Mark Gadsden and Dorothy Wright during the month of Jan. 2003 at the North Charleston City Gallery in North Charleston, SC.
Mark Gadsden
Mark Gadsden was introduced to the power of art at an early age. At three years old, he was already drawing cartoon characters. He has been drawing, carving, and painting ever since then. In the five years that have followed his graduation from Winston-Salem State University, he has taught art to elementary students in Berkeley and Orangeburg counties. Also, within that time span he has continued to hone his art skills in different media such as Watercolors, Oil, Pastels, Prints, and Acrylic. His work has been shown in local exhibitions with Print Studio South as well as being a participant in a juried art exhibition with the Moja Arts Festival. He has also received art grants from The Community Foundation serving Coastal South Carolina in 2000 and 2002. Gadsden is known for his vibrant use of color and attention to detail. He currently resides in Lithonia, GA.
Dorothy Wright
Dorothy Wright is a well-known local artist and former art teacher. Wright painted a portrait of civil rights activist, Septima Clark, which became the first painting by a black woman to be hung in the permanent collection at Charleston City Hall. Wright's paintings, often used as murals in churches, are three-dimensional and reflect the lives of blacks in the Lowcountry from the 1930's to the present.
