Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Amy Funderburk
Aisling: an Artist's Vision of Ireland, a solo show of Irish landscapes by Winston-Salem, NC, artist Amy Funderburk, is currently on display in The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County's Boardroom Gallery through Jan. 24, 2003. Called Aisling for the Gaelic term for a vision, the work is a result of the artist's trip to Ireland in Oct. 2001. The trip inspired landscape imagery in three media: oil, pastel, and black and white photography.
The use of three media is significant for the body of work. They echo Land, Sea, and Sky, one of the many sacred triplicities of the Irish ancestors, forces that are omnipresent on the island. Funderburk describes her experience with some of these elements: "An angry west coast surf repeatedly pounds dramatic rocky cliffs. The mutable sky constantly boasts amazing clouds as it casts an indescribable light quality on earth and water. The sun is brightly shining one minute, then out of nowhere comes soft rain. On the hilltops, winds that at times you cannot walk against further twist the protective hawthorns into tangled shapes."
Funderburk's travels took her to all five provinces of the island in both the Republic and Northern Ireland. The country's varied landscapes are all represented in her work.
