Black Mountain Center for the Arts in Black Mountain, NC, Features Annual Miniatures Exhibition
Black Mountain Center for the Arts in Black Mountain, NC, is presenting the 5th Annual Juried International Miniature Art Exhibit and Sale. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 25, 2004. Miniature works of art from across the United States and around the world will be included in this competition.
The Judge for this year's competition was John Mac Kah. A resident of Asheville, NC, he is currently an instructor at Arrowmont, J.C. Campbell Folk School and The Fine Arts League of Asheville. He also conducts private and group classes in his studio in Asheville's River District. Mac Kah's work can be described as contemporary realism. He is represented by 16 Patton Gallery in Asheville.
Though small (no work will be larger than 4" by 6") the miniature works display a depth and attention to detail that have captivated audiences for generations. This unique art form, based on minute scale, traces its roots back to the book painting and illuminated manuscripts of the 7th century. Miniatures are extremely detailed works with a strength of composition which more than competes with larger paintings. Today's miniatures generally use the gentle 1/6th guide, limiting subjects to no more than one sixth of the actual size of the subject. Scrimshaw, or ivory carving, is one translation of the form that in today's political climate finds its way onto recycled piano keys.
A fine miniature can be magnified many times over and it will still hold together as a fine work of art of much greater size. Techniques such as stippling, hatching and pointillism are sometimes only discovered under magnification. (Magnifying glasses will be provided for viewers of the exhibit!)
