January Issue 2004
Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Annual Pleasure Places Exhibit
The group exhibition
Pleasure Places IV will take place Jan. 16 through Feb.
28, 2004, at Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC. Participating
artists include: Katherine Grossfeld, William Harsh, Page Laughlin,
Elena Madden, Ruth Ava Lyons, Gail Wegodsky, Lael Weyenberg. These
artists explore interior and exterior worlds with varied styles
and approaches.
Ruth Ava Lyons' paintings present a quiet and contemplative world.
A highly personal iconography speaks of spiritual and poetic reflection
in a world of overwhelming information. Page Laughlin creates
densely layered images of interior spaces, reminiscent of Architectural
Digest and House Beautiful, which make for an intriguing
investigation of painterly space.
In dynamic, colorful abstract paintings, Elena Madden captures
the fleeting pattern and light of moving water that suggests nature's
rhythms. William Harsh's still-lifes have a monumental quality.
The arrangements of familiar yet animated images are curiously
inviting.
Katherine Grossfeld
is a featured artist in American Painting 2003. Her renderings
of marbles and intimate objects are playful and tantalizing distractions.
Lael Weyenberg takes us to exotic European locations of mystery
and retreat with his works.
Gail Wegodsky's most recent retrospective at the Oglethorpe Museum
in GA revealed her meticulous attention to detail, and masterful
renaissance technique. Her works in this exhibition will display
those same qualities.
