January Issue 2004

HoFP Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Noah

HoFP Gallery in Columbia, SC, is welcoming back artist "Noah" Saunders for WIRED, a one-man show featuring his sculpture and paintings. The show will run through Feb. 3, 2004.

Saunders is best known for his distinct wire sculpture. His sculpture has an expressive quality that conveys strong movement and emotion. The unique characteristics or situation of each of his subjects can be sensed in his work. Each piece has its own thought or mood. The viewer may find that he or she becomes lost in this emotive quality. In addition to sculpture, Saunders will also present new paintings. His works on canvas are bold, colorful creations. His tones and hues are vibrant; some are almost electric in their intensity.

Saunders's family is rife with artistic talent. Both his father and stepmother are accomplished artists. As a child his parents nurtured and kindled his artistic leanings. Saunders made his professional debut as a high school student. Inspired by and celebrating the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta Saunders created sculpture featuring athletics and was featured in his first one person show.

Saunders got a bruising in high school; not unusual for a young man choosing to be open about his passions and honest about his sexuality gay and resolute. But he transmuted this social gauntlet into a serious show called "Steps to Safety". In part the show was a memorial to Matthew Shepard, the Wyoming college student who was murdered for being gay. In part the show was a measure of self-healing. More recently, a particular interest in the American Indian legacy in Georgia has grown into a general fascination with Pre-Columbian civilizations and their rich artistic legacies. These interests figure strongly in Saunders's wood fired ceramics.

Today Saunders lives with his partner Steven in Athens, GA. They share their home with a rambunctious hound named Yonah. With National Forests and rivers nearby, they enjoy excursions out on the land. Fortified by this matrix of family, environment and community Saunders aspires to render the artistic spirit in a playful purity of expression.
