Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, Presents Exhibits for the New Year

Opening Jan. 5 and continuing through Feb. 29, 2004, the Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, is hosting three new exhibitions.

The photographs of Errol Daniels from East Amherst, NY, will be shown. This joint project between Daniels and the Cuban Association of Artists and Writers, resulted in the book Cuba: A Jewish Journey upon which this bilingual show is based.

Jews began to immigrate to Cuba from the US during the Cuban War of Independence (Spanish-American War) and from Europe in the first quarter of the 20th Century. This exhibition will be only the second showing of these photographs in this country, and the first exhibition on the East Coast. The Museum will have the books for sale and Daniels will be available to sign them on Jan. 17.

Works by Yoshiko Moon, a native of Japan will also be on display. In 1995, after 30 years of training, Yoshiko attained the license of "High Master", a level usually associated with men in the male dominated society of Japan. This exhibit will explore the beauty of the traditional Japanese graphic tradition of calligraphy and Sumi-e. Yoshiko currently resides in Simpsonville, SC, with her husband. She participates in many local art shows and also teaches the art of Sumi-e accompanied by a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Southern Exposure is the name of one of the best-known exhibition groups in the Upstate. Their roster of talented artists includes; Carol Augthun, Jessica Barnes, David Benson, Amy Goldstein-Rice, Claire Miller Hopkins, Linda Hudgins, Cynthia Link, Mark Olencki, Jane Allen Nodine, Sara Dame Setzer, Doris Turner, Ann Wenz, Winston Wingo, and David Zacharias. Many of these award-winning artists are also teachers who have had a great impact on students from the elementary to college level. This exhibit will feature new works in a variety of mediums. Many of the pieces will also be available for sale.
