Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Judy McElynn

The exhibition, Points South, celebrates the people, places and landscapes of the South through the medium of pastel. Artist Judy McElynn employs various techniques and subtly altered perspectives to the subjects of everyday life in her show which runs from Jan. 18 through Feb. 12, 2005, at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC.

"This show represents the beginning of a more art-centered existence for me," says McElynn. "While I have painted most of my life, I have rarely experienced the passion that I feel for my present home, its environs and the people who make it a place of contrasts and beauty."

Originally from York, PA, McElynn arrived in Hilton Head after a career in apparel and interior design in New York City, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia, PA. Drawn to the urban lifestyle during her career years, she enjoyed the fast pace of city living, but exposure to the south during her years in the textile and apparel industries led her to develop a fondness and appreciation for southern living.

McElynn is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY, with a major in textile engineering. Upon graduation she worked for several major corporations and eventually owned her own private label childrens' wear firm. Influenced by artistic friends in NYC, she turned to the full-time pursuit of fine art in 1995, studying at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA and the Philadelphia Academy of Art. Once in the Lowcountry, McElynn turned to the use of pastels for their vibrant colors, flexibility and practicality for rendering the marshes en plein air.

Whether the piece of art honors the value of hard work, or looks under the skirt of a towering palm, captures the vast expanse of a marsh or a fleeting moment at dusk on a city street, McElynn's art depicts the sights of the Lowcountry that she enjoys calling home.

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit, membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and enhancing the art skills of its members. Founded in 1972, the league has close to 900 members. In addition to the gallery, which is maintained by volunteers, the Hilton Head Art League offers classes at the Art Academy for students of all ages and levels of ability, intensive week-long workshops with nationally renowned art instructors, numerous community art events and a scholarship program for students pursuing a career in the visual arts.
