Corrigan Gallery in Charleston, SC, Celebrates Grand Opening by Offering Works by Beverly Derrick
Corrigan Gallery in Charleston, SC, proudly presents, Figurative Works, featuring the paintings and graphite drawings of Beverly Grantham Derrick in her first solo show in Charleston, the city of her birth. As the gallery's formal grand opening, the exhibition opens on Jan. 27 and continues through Feb. 22, 2006.
Derrick's masterful handling of the human figure creates a lyrical balance between realism and abstraction. With a colorful romantic sensuality of life expressed in paint, Derrick's oils display the universality of experience.
Derrick has painted and drawn all of her life. With solo shows in the 1980s and 1990s in South Carolina and in the 1990s and 2001 in Washington, DC, Derrick has clearly established herself as a success. Drawings of an exquisite and masterful nature balance the elegantly soft, luscious essence of her approach to oil painting.
Exploring the vitality of color, shape and movement innate in the people of Africa Derrick has uncovered the essence of humanity. Scenes from the fishing village of Mbour, south of Senegal's capital Dakar where the fishermen work from brightly painted boats, handcarved and passed down through many generations, illustrate Derrick's superb handling of the human figure. The spirit of living, breathing, pulsating nature of life is represented in the works whether they present the human figure or landscape, here or there. Derrick has also been inspired by the sleepy village of Rockville, SC's landscape.
Connecting with her subjects on an intuitive level, Derrick expresses that "The simple act of drawing the figure evokes a powerful response to my subject expressed in the energy of line." Finding the universal spirit, the connectedness of humanity is expressed through the rhythm and flow of line and flow in her work. Local Charleston characters and scenery round out the exhibition of Derrick's stellar works.
