Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Presents Works by Chiqui Ezcurra Muller & Area Students
The Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present the exhibits, ArtReach 2006 featuring works by area high school students, on view from Jan 5 - 13, 2006, and North and South, featuring paintings by Chiqui Ezcurra Muller, on view from Jan 17 - Feb. 11, 2006, both in the Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station.
It's become a tradition to open the gallery to high school students in the area and show their remarkable artwork. It gives the students a chance to see their work exhibited in a professional forum. Students from the Heritage Academy, Hilton Head Prep and the Hilton Head Christian Academy are participating.
Each year we are amazed at the quality and creativity of the art these students are capable of. Work in all mediums adorns the walls and we invite the public to experience the exceptional talents of our local students. Some of these students may go on to pursue a career in the arts. Though few of the pieces are available for sale (most students need the work for their portfolios when applying to colleges), the full purchase price of any artwork that is sold will be given to the artists without any gallery fees. It is our gift to the students and the community.
"Such fine artwork
deserves to be brought to the attention of the community,"
says Cecilia Shuck, Art League President. "It is one of the
ways in which the League encourages young people to pursue the
arts. We also provide a scholarship to students who plan to study
the visual arts. Art enriches our lives and deserves to be nurtured."
Teachers Diane Bass of the Heritage Academy, Kathryn Ramseur-Riley
at Hilton Head Prep., and Louanne Barrett of the Christian Academy
are excited about the opportunity offered each year by the ArtReach
program and look forward to sharing the work of their students
with the public.
Chiqui Ezcurra Muller
Chiqui Ezcurra Muller was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where she studied art at the Academia Horacio Butler, the National School of Fine Arts and with Catalan painter Vincente Puig. In 1964 she made her home in the United States and studied at the Art Life-Craft Studios in New York City, with George Peter at the Westchester Art Workshop in White Plains, NY and with G.G. Kopilak in Valhalla, NY. Her home is now on Hilton Head Island.
The countryside in Westchester County, NY, the South Carolina Lowcountry and the Vermont mountains are favorite subjects of Muller's work. She has painted extensively from landscape recollections of her travels. Though she most frequently paints in oils, she has also enjoyed using acrylics, inks, watercolors and pastels.
Muller looks forward
to each new painting with great anticipation. "When I stand
before an empty canvas, I enjoy myself to the limit," she
says. "Most artists say that they fear an empty canvas. I
adore it. I find myself thinking about the colors, shapes and
ideas that I can put upon it. For years at the Fine Arts School
in Buenos Aires, I first drew, then colored and finally painted
the human figure and portraits. That was my thing until I discovered
still lifes and lately, landscapes.
When Muller completes a painting that she really likes, she loves
to create a series of paintings based on the same subject. She
approaches each new painting with her own version of Zen, meditating
on "beauty, wonderful things, soft feelings and the meaning
of it all."
Muller's work has been
highly acclaimed. She has won numerous awards, including a first
prize in the New Rochelle Art Association and a painting award
in the Mamaronek Art League. Other awards include some from the
Women's Clubs of Bedford Hills, Pocantico Hills and Pleasantville,
NY, the Hilton Head Artists Association and the Hilton Head Art
League.
Muller is a past president of the Hilton Head Plantation Artists
Association. In addition to being a member of the Hilton Head
Art League, she is also a member of the Beaufort Art Association. Her
work hangs in corporations and private collections throughout
the United States, Europe and South America.
The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and increasing the art skills of its members. It provides classes for art enthusiasts at any level at the Art Academy on Cordillo Parkway and week-long studio workshops with nationally renowned art instructors at the Disney Studio at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. In addition, League operates a volunteer-managed gallery in Pineland Station for the exhibition and sale of artwork by its members.
