Modern Eye Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Daniel Phill
Modern Eye Gallery in Charlotte, NC, proudly presents, Flower Power, featuring new botanical interpretations by California artist, Daniel Phill. The exhibition, which is comprised of original works on canvas and paper, opens Jan. 6 and continues through Feb. 17, 2006.
Flower Power showcases a new series of work, which Phill characterizes as "the interpretation of forms from nature through the act of painting and observing". Phill, foremost a colorist, creates "fiery, saturated hues reminiscent of David Hockney's", states ARTnews critic, Dottie Indyke (Oct. 2005). His work consists of intense movement and color with a foundation that owes its debt to the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1950's.
Phill's perspective
gives these flowers long stems of dripped paint and luminous kinetic
energy. Indyke goes on to say "he pieces together organic
shapes in his abstractions and teases images from splatters of
paint in his floral paintings".
Phill's work is imbued with a natural fluidity and improvisational
process; one feels the evocative nature of this botanical imagery
as if the flowers were floating across fields, unconfined and
moving. "Evoking Jackson Pollock", states Indyke, "Phill
works in an anarchic manner that makes the process look easy.
These canvases demonstrated an impressive control of his material".
In these paintings, Phill describes "essential details -
long, slender tendrils become reeds, pressed and flattened globs
of paint turn into petals, and delicate veins emerge from colors
bleeding together". Indyke concludes, "hard-edged flower
forms materialize out of soft, layered grounds, and the partnership
of restraint and spontaneity results in a dramatic tension".
Phill has an unerring eye for color harmonies and spatial relationships, which invariably touches the heart and soul. In Flower Power, the viewer will find both a body of work that is painterly and powerful as well as contemplative and emotive. The viewer will have the opportunity to experience flowers anew from an abstract expressionist perspective. Through his abstract floral fantasies, Phill invites the viewer to re-interpret our real-life floral counterparts as he does with each canvas he paints.
