USCB Performing Arts Center Gallery in Beaufort, SC, Features SC Artisans Center Exhibit
USCB Performing Arts Center Gallery in Beaufort, SC, will present the exhibition, Handmade in the South, an annual touring show of the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro, SC. The exhibit will be on view from Jan. 13 - 30, 2006.The show features the work of South Carolina's finest artisans.
Handmade in the South is sponsored by the Arts Council of Beaufort County.
"After a two-year hiatus, we are excited to bring this important show back to Beaufort," said Lily Joplin, Executive Director of the Arts Council. "The Artisans Center has an impressive roster of artists truly reflecting the immense amount of fantastic art found in South Carolina."
There will be work
showcasing the wide range of styles and techniques from nationally
recognized artisans who make their home in South Carolina. The
exhibit will feature metal sculpture from Stephen Kishel, decoy
carvings by Tom Boozer, pottery from Carol Reevy and Reanne Thacker,
textile pieces by Bonnie Fagerstrom, photography by Greg Smith,
turned wood bowls by Stacy Rohr, and sculptures from Ronnie Riddle,
in addition to works by many other South Carolina artists.
Eight of the artists from the Artisans Center will also go into
local schools on Jan. 13, 2006, to demonstrate their craft
to the students. Jada Gray, liaison to the Arts Council for
the Beaufort County School District, has worked with the schools
to place each artist in an appropriate classroom setting.
Stephen Kishel, a metal sculptor from Bluffton, will demonstrate
to the students at the Academy for Career Excellence; photographer
Greg Smith will explain techniques and processes to students at
Bluffton High School; Woodturner Stacy Rohr will visit Kristen
Munroe's class at Robert Smalls Middle School; Joanna Angell will
be at Beaufort High and Battery Creek High students in Lila McLeod's
class will learn from Carol Reevy. Reanne Thacker will demonstrate
to students in Stephanie Heyward's Beaufort Middle School humanities
class, and Bonnie Fagerstrom will be at Hilton Head Middle School.
"It's great these artists are willing to give their time to share their talents with the students," said Jada Gray. "The students love the chance to meet and talk to working artists, and the artists enjoy having the chance to show and explain their processes."
