Greenville Technical College in Greer, SC, Features Works by Patti Brady
The Department of Visual Arts at Greenville Technical College's Greer Campus Galleries in Greer, SC, will present the exhibition, Minutia and Materiality: An Exhibition of Paintings, Monotypes, and Mixed Media Works on Paper by artist Patti Brady. The exhibit will be on view from Jan. 12 through Mar. 5, 2007.
The title of this exhibition aptly describes the work of South Carolina artist Patti Brady whose abstract imagery takes influence from the specifics of botanical forms as well as allusions to the southern landscape.
Brady describes her work as "an expression of the minutia of botany, containers, irritations, voids, veils, growth, decay, seeds. Its about what intrudes into, and onto these spaces." What also drives her work is an incredible facility with materials. Her work is densely layered, making use of the contrast between the materiality of paint, controlled drawing processes, and evocative color.
Brady has been awarded the 2006-2007 South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC) Fellowship Award in Visual Arts in recognition of her superior artistic merit. "This is an incredible honor for one of Greenville's finest visual artists," said Alan Ethridge, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Arts Council. "Patti is not only committed to her artistry but also to the visual arts community as a whole. An inspirational and dedicated teacher, Patti is one of the founding artists of Greenville Open Studios which since 2002 has evolved into the premier event for resident visual artists," he continued.
Brady is the Working Artist Program Director
for Golden Artist Colors, a fine-arts paint manufacturer in New
Berlin, NY. She has lectured and taught on the use of acrylics
at numerous universities, art groups and retailers. She has developed
curriculum for acrylic classes for artists and art educators throughout
the county, and she currently manages 30 national and international
artists for the Golden Working Artist Program in the US, Canada,
Korea, France, Austria, Spain, Mexico and the Netherlands. Brady
has worked with Golden Artist Colors for 12 years in Sales and
Marketing.
Brady received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and
her paintings, prints and hand-painted books have been exhibited
nationally at the Brand Library, Glendale, CA; Arch Gallery, Chicago,
IL; Mills College, Oakland, CA; and the University of California
at Berkeley. In 1994 her paintings were favorably reviewed in
The New York Times, and she was awarded a Silver Award
in the California Discovery Project in 1995. Her other exhibitions
include The International Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC;
the Greenville County Museum of Art; Furman University; and the
South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities.
In 2005, Brady had a one-woman show at Pelter Gallery in Greenville, SC, and at Lander University in Greenwood, SC. Columbia College in Columbia, SC, hosted a joint show with her husband, Phil Garrett, another well established resident painter.
