Preservation Society of Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by The Salon Grrls of Atlanta, GA
Preservation Society of Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC, will present the exhibit, Tension: A Fine Art Exhibition by the Atlanta-Based Salon Grrls, at the Horace Williams House from Jan. 7 - 28, 2007.
The Salon Grrls are four Atlanta, GA, visual artists, Tania Becker, Barbara Rehg, Jennifer Julian, and Ann Rowles, who meet regularly to discuss art, life, and the pursuit of happiness. The artists' media vary, and include painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. All are members of the Women's Caucus for Art of Georgia and exhibit throughout Atlanta and beyond. Becker and Rowles are former residents of Durham, NC.
Becker is preparing for a show in Paris as well as a solo show in Atlanta at Sandler Hudson Gallery in Apr. 2007. Rehg has started new work which deals with the excitement and tension that is inherent in the collision of what is known from the past meeting the desire for change.
Julian's work continues to deal with human emotion and perception and how it is affected by life experience. She just completed a solo exhibition at the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum in LaGrange, GA. Rowles is a studio artist at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center who creates skin-like body casts, which she reconstructs to reference conflicts between self-image and cultural standards. She has recently exhibited at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, and the Center for Visual Arts in Greensboro, NC.
When asked about the title of the show, Tension, the women will only say, "This collaboration is based on mutual tumultuous life experiences resulting in cathartic art making,"
