January Issue 2007
Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Sudie Payne Daves
Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting an exhibit of works by Sudie Payne Daves, on view through January 31, 2007.
Having enjoyed flowers all of her life, Daves
continues this custom by growing and grooming flowers in her home
and yard. Then, she transfers their beauty to paper through
the medium of watercolor.
Daves lives near Conway, SC, on the Waccamaw River. This
location is ideal for plants like the Trumpet Vine, Jack-in-the-Pulpit,
Beauty Berry, Magnolia, Malaviscus, Hibiscus, and Lizard Tail
- all of which proliferate in her yard. She has put each
of these flowers in her paintings at some time or another. Daves
likes to bring cut Lilies or potted Amaryllis into her studio
to paint. Her daughter was married a year ago and many of
the wedding flowers made their way into her paintings. There
is no question that her paintings are realistic, but one can see
a sublime feature with a velvety quality giving each flower its
due.
Daves also visits the Carolina Bays with her husband, a nature photographer, in order to paint Pitcher Plants and Venus Fly-Traps. However, she only paints these endangered species from photographs she takes.
