Janaury Issue 2008
Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC, Features Works by Gary Geboy
Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC, will present an exhibit of new works by Gary Geboy, on view from Jan. 4 - 24, 2008.
In this new year show, engaging photographer Gary Geboy, author of Transfer of Grace from Joggling Board Press of Charleston, SC, presents the dream-washed colors of the Lowcountry and beyond. "To me, color is less ethereal than black and white," Geboy explained. "The eye sees in color, so it adds an element of realism to the images. But I didn't want to make picture postcards of the Lowcountry, so I took the photos out of the real and into the surreal."
A group of Geboy's images in the show are large-format giclees from a series called Lost. The photos are captured from dreams and wanderings. "I chose not to probe for the names behind the faces," Geboy said, "for me they represent people and places lost to time. They are defined not by their surroundings but by the memories they suggest - which is a recurring theme in all my work. A photograph should capture that element of familiarity so we all recognize something within each picture that triggers a memory within all of us."
Charles Street Gallery is an established source for Lowcountry and international art, presented within a carefully renovated house surrounded by a lush garden in Beaufort's historic district.
