Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by David Whisnant
Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, will present an exhibition of photographs by David Whisnant at the Martha Cloud Chapman Gallery, Raines Center, from Jan. 4 through Feb. 29, 2008.
Whisnant started taking 35-mm photographs and developing his own black and white prints in a makeshift darkroom in the late 1960s. Over the next dozen years, one of his main projects was a series of photographs of abandoned farms in Illinois and Wisconsin, some of which had been friends' homes when he was a child. The farm prints in this exhibit have been made using digital images scanned from negatives taken during this period.
As Whisnant's children grew older, he emerged from the darkroom and, although continuing to shoot slide film, no longer did his own prints until he purchased a digital camera six years ago. The ready availability of digital image editing software and high quality photo printers led Whisnant to begin printing his own photographs again, now almost exclusively in color. This discovery also prompted him to teach two interim projects, both named "The Digital Darkroom," that have introduced Wofford students to the pleasures of digital photography and photo editing. Most of the color photographs in this exhibit were shot in the last few years with a digital SLR camera.
