November Issue 2000
Works by Anne Simpkins at Durham Arts Council's Allenton Gallery in Durham, NC
Monotype Prints, an exhibition of prints by artist, Anne Simpkins, will hang in the Allenton Gallery of the Durham Arts Council Building in Durham, NC, from Nov. 9 through Dec. 11, 2000.
The exhibit of monotypes emphasizes an intrigue in people and the movements and gestures of daily life. The images make reference to gestures Simpkins observes daily, such as seeing people write on their own palm, nibble on a braid, or make a face at an overheard comment. Simpkins depicts real people that she encounters, combining these gestures with narratives of work, play, grooming and adornment.
Simpkins has created paintings and prints for the last fifteen years. She is a recent recipient of a CORE Fellowship with the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX and is currently an Assistant Professor of Art for the Elon College Art Department.
