November Issue 2000
Fiber Exhibit At Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC
From Nov. 1 - 30, Blue Spiral 1 in downtown Asheville, NC, will feature an exhibition of paper and Shaker baskets by Western North Carolina artist Patti Quinn Hill. A professional basketmaker for almost a decade, Hill has taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Arrowmont School of Crafts and the Appalachian Center for Craft, in addition to private workshops in her studio.
For the past two years, Hill has incorporated hand-marbling, paste paper and other various painting techniques to create surface patterns on paper she then cuts and weaves. The forms of her contemporary baskets are inspired by traditional shapes, and the colors from her surroundings, particularly nature and textiles. The artist avoids use of straight lines in her weaving, which helps her baskets achieve a feeling of lightness and movement. Hill also creates double wall baskets, two baskets which share one rim, enabling her to produce an interior palette distinct from the exterior surface.
The presentation will take place in Blue Spiral l's Showcase Gallery on the upper level. The Showcase Gallery program, initiated in 1997, highlights a different artist every month, giving them the liberty to develop a significant body of work for a distinct space.
