Charleston's City Gallery Shows Works by Loren Schwerd
The City of Charleston's City Gallery at the
Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit
of mixed-media by local artist Loren Schwerd from November 3-30
entitled Trappings.
Schwerd was born in New York City. She received her BFA from Tulane
University and her MFA from Syracuse University, where she was
awarded a Graduate Fellowship. Schwerd was the recipient of an
Artist Angel Grant for residency at the Vermont Studio Center
in Johnson, VT. Her works have recently been exhibited at the
Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center
in Buffalo, NY, the University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Gallery,
and the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester. Schwerd
currently teaches sculpture at the College of Charleston.
Schwerd comments on her work: "My works are concerned with
found and fabricated histories. Histories are "found"
through the used and worn materials I am inspired by. These objects
contribute their culturally assigned meanings, values, and narratives
to their new context and invite a reexamination of these associations.
Histories are "fabricated" through different forms of
documentation which indicate that these objects have endured a
former life, They remain as evidence of activity and serve as
testimony to the life and circumstance of their previous owner.
I borrow many forms from the history of fashion and the history
of function. The suggestion of some ambiguous function, transforms
a static object to one whose action is suspended in time, waiting
to be picked-up or put-on. I hope to animate my objects through
these allusions to human contact."
