Fifty Artists And Galleries Open Their Doors For The December 2000 Durham Art Walk

The fifth biannual Durham Art Walk will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10am - 6pm in Downtown Durham, NC.

The December 2000 Durham Art Walk is a self-guided tour of 21 locations including 50 artist studios and galleries featuring pottery, paintings, drawings, jewelry, photography, sculpture, collage, fiber art, and much more. The Durham Art Walk encompasses twenty-one locations including Durham Arts Place (housing 13 studios), Tyndall Gallery and Horizon Gallery in Brightleaf, Hayti Heritage Center, and the Durham Art Guild's CCB Gallery. The walk begins at the Durham Arts Council located at 120 Morris Street (on the corner of Morgan and Morris).

The Durham Art Walk heightens awareness of the rich arts environment of Downtown Durham. The mission of the event is to encourage exchange among artists, business owners, and participants to stimulate interest in and recognize the importance of the creative process. The event promotes the revitalization of Downtown Durham by bringing people into the area to experience the arts.

Other components of the event include live music provided by the roving musicians of the Durham Music Teachers Association and Harpsichordist Elaine Funaro (at 600 Foster St. from 2-4pm), art raffles, and refreshments at various locations. The Durham Art Walk is held in conjunction with Light Up Durham each December. Hayti Heritage Center and the Durham Arts Council are locals for the Talent All Over Town component of Light Up Durham as well as stops on the Durham Art Walk tour.

The Durham Art Walk is sponsored by Spee Dee Que, Durham Arts Council, The Durham Art Guild, Inc., Claudia Fulshaw Design, Tyndall Gallery, Downtown Durham Inc., The Scrap Exchange, Javier Alarcón, Durham Music Teachers Association, Christy's Custom Framing, Dan Ellison, Attorney at Law, Nancy Tuttle May, and The Independent Weekly.
