Justine Gallery in Southport, NC, Features Works by Thomas 'Rusty' Hughes
Justine, a gallery of fine art and crafts, located in Southport, NC, is hosting an exhibition entitled, A Contemporary Approach of the Old Masters and Other Wonderful Things, featuring paintings by Thomas 'Rusty' Hughes. The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 30.
Steven Litt of The News and Observer in Raleigh, NC, called Hughes, "...an ambitious painter who deserves more exposure." Hughes employs bold figures and vibrant patterns to catch the eye. Flaunting a mastery of perspective and keen understanding of visual perception, he creates depth, but makes the viewer aware of the illusion. Is it a painting? Or a painting of a painting? But there is much more to his canvases than mere optical tricks. The juxtaposition of the familiar with the unknown, the abstract with the real, haunts the viewer, leading us to consider deeper meanings.
Hughes modestly summarizes his process: "I begin with a base, then bring in something the viewer can relate to. Now I distort or alter the familiar in my own way, and hopefully the viewer will understand. Even if they don't, they usually come away with something. Therefore I feel successful."
Indeed, if success is measured by fostering insight or enrichment, viewers of Thomas 'Rusty" Hughes' works will be most satisfied.
