Jerald Melberg Gallery - Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Thomas McNickle

The Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charleston, SC, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition entitled, A New Perspective: Watercolors and Oils of the South Carolina Lowcountry, by Thomas McNickle from Nov. 3 through Dec. 16, 2000. The exhibition of new works on paper and canvas is being offered in conjunction with the Charleston Fine Arts Annual, taking place Nov. 3 & 4. Included in this new body of work will be depictions of the Lowcountry of South Carolina in which McNickle has captured the very essence of the marshlands and coastal areas.

Collectors and institutions around the country have long been enamored by McNickle's beautiful depictions of rural Pennsylvania, but it is only recently that he has come to focus his mastery of plein air painting on the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

A member of the American and National Watercolor Societies, McNickle's exceptional technical ability has been evident since he first began painting in his teens. Throughout his career he has mastered the traditional landscape while simultaneously giving his format a fresh appearance with unexpected indications of pastel. In doing so, McNickle's paintings take on both a photo-realist and American Impressionist style.

Viewed up close, his landscapes - with their rich color, vigorous brushwork and generous amounts of paint blend into a combination of soft and hard edges - look abstract. But from a distance, they coalesce into recognizable images of fields, streams, trees and marshland.

McNickle's work has been exhibited in over thirty museums and gallery exhibitions over the course of his career. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Hoyt Institute of Fine Art, Vero Beach Center for the Arts, Kansas State University, BASF Corporation, Bank of America and USAirways.
