SC's State Fair Fine Art Exhibit One Big Show - We Have Results
At the Awards Reception and Opening of the South Carolina State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition, held in Columbia, SC, on Oct. 3, award winners were announced by the Fine Arts Superintendent, Jennie Branham. More than 150 awards were presented. This exhibit is one of the largest exhibits in the nation with awards and patron purchases of more than $73,000. Amateur and professional entries totaled 1457 with 1,128 remaining as part of the exhibit.
Claire K. Farrell of Lexington, SC, was awarded $3000. for Best Of Show Professional. Her piece, an oil on canvas entitled, Deweese Island Moonrise, not only took the highest awardat the show and was one of the first pieces to be purchased by a patron.
Mary Jane Davis of Aiken, SC, was awarded $800. for Best Of Show Amateur. Her piece, an oil on canvas entitled, Lipstick, was hung opposite the professional piece in an equal place of prestige.
The Sixth Annual Spirit Achievement Award for Exemplary Service to the Arts in South Carolina was awarded to Guy F. Lipscomb, Jr. Lipscomb, a retired entrepreneur, is a noted artist, art teacher and author.
The Annual Exhibit is open to artists, amateur and professional, who are residents of South Carolina. Mark D. Gottsegen, Professor of Art, University of North Carolina Greensboro was juror for both divisions. Professor Gottsegen said of the exhibit, "The work I saw was full of intelligence, enthusiasm, energy, dedication to craft and general love of making objects - all ingredients necessary to the production of art. The main difference between the two sections that I could detect was a certain surety of execution and polish in presentation among the Professional entries....for me, it doesn't really matter what the subject matter of the work, if it contains a complex, esthetic and rich combination of the formal elements...."
Robin Waites, Chief Curator of Art at the South Carolina State Museum, was juror for the thirty pieces that will compose the Traveling Exhibit. MYND Corporation has been the sponsor of this exhibit since its inception. The Exhibit travels throughout the state to art centers and small museums under the Traveling Exhibits Program through the South Carolina State Museum. More than 660,000 persons had the opportunity to view the exhibit on the grounds of the State Fair. Through the Traveling Exhibit perhaps that many more will have the opportunity.
For further information call the Fair at 803/345-1855.
