November Issue 2001
Blue Ridge Arts Center in Seneca, SC, Features Works by Gerard Erley
Gerard Erley will display his paintings and pastels at the Blue Ridge Arts Center in Seneca, SC, in an exhibition entitled, Imagined Landscapes, which will be on view from Nov. 11 through Dec. 21, 2001.
Erley has had several one-person exhibits in Illinois, Florida, NC and SC. His award-winning artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries from New York to California, and can be found in corporate and private collections both in the US and abroad.
The artist creates imagined landscapes in oil paint on canvas and panels, and also in pastel on paper. Erley states, "Although my paintings present the landscape, I do not paint nature in an attempt to duplicate what the eye sees. I explore landscape imagery for its expressive potential, its unique emotional language. I seek to discover the poetry in a solitary tree or a passing cloud and to communicate that poetry in paint."
Last fall, the artist won first place in painting at the SC State Fair Professional Exhibition, and his painting, Moonlit Landscape, was chosen to travel with other artworks to art centers and museums throughout the state. His pastel, Trees on a Rise, won third place in drawing at the fair, and was purchased by First Citizens Bank.
This summer Erley won an honorable mention at the 57th Street Art Fair in Chicago, IL, a merit award at the Old Capitol Art Fair in Springfield, IL, and second place at the Carmel (Indiana) International Arts Festival. His work was included in summer and fall shows at Aliya Gallery in Atlanta, GA. The artist recently fulfilled a residency at Poinsett State Park in SC.
