November Issue 2001
City Art in Columbia, SC, Features Second Solo Exhibition of New Works by Marcelo Novo
Built
on the success of Marcelo Novo's last solo show at City Art, in
Columbia, SC, the exhibition, Transitions: The Sequel,
features new work by the Argentinean-born artist which will be
on display from Nov. 5 through Dec. 31, 2001. A Columbia resident,
Novo is among the most identifiable artists in the region. Known
for his surrealist imagery and for the process called "psychic
automatism," Novo works simultaneously in several different
media. The show will feature several color canvases and color
pencil drawings, one large mural, and the artist's most recent
forays into papier-mâché sculpture.
Viewers will be treated to familiar images often seen in the artist's
work - the figure, stiletto heels, coffee cups, warehouse lamps,
horses, birds and cages are prevalent. Also featured in the exhibit
will be an installation recently seen in Sumter, SC, Rescue
from the Blue.
Novo comments, "During the last six months I have been experimenting with papier-mâché sculptures, and I intend to incorporate this medium into my installation. The subconscious plays an important role in my creative process, I prefer not to have a clear idea of where my work is going. I use the different elements that participate in my compositions, as if they were pieces of a puzzle. I believe playing is essential within the creative context. My art is not intended to communicate any particular message. I consider its up to the viewers to interpret it, or not, based on their personal experience/s."
Novo's works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including the Centro Cultural Recoleta, in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the Cinque Gallery in New York; and the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC. He has participated in various public art projects such as the Palmetto Tree Project, Street Gallery I & II (billboard art) in South Carolina, and Chairs-On-Parade in Charlotte, NC.
In addition, his work is in public and corporate collections, including those of the South Carolina State Arts Collection, Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties and Computer Sciences Corporation in South Carolina.
Novo is the recipient of numerous awards and honors; has received grants from the South Carolina Arts Commission, was a scholar-in-residence in the Faculty Resource Network Summer Program at New York University, and was a semi-finalist for the Artlink@Sothebys International Young Art 2001 Competition.
Novo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1963. He graduated as a Profesor Nacional de Bellas Artes from Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredon, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and received a Master's degree from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. He lives and works, as a full-time artist, in Columbia where he is represented by City Art Gallery.
The public is cordially invited to experience the most recent compilation of works by Novo. He is especially interested in meeting each of you personally and talking about transitions. A truly wonderful opportunity awaits you. Please join us.
Marcelo Novo will also be on hand at City Art
for Columbia's annual Vista Lights, where merchants in
the Congaree Vista area of Columbia open their doors for an evening
of celebration, which takes place on Nov. 15 from 6 to 9:30pm.
