City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Kim Goold
The City Gallery
at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an
exhibit of mixed media by Sullivan's Island, SC, artist Kim Goold
from Nov. 2 - 30 entitled Mutations.
Goold was born in a small city in Ontario, Canada. He arrived in the Charleston area in 1980. A former newspaper journalist, he has devoted his energies to photography and creative writing for many years. Goold is best recognized as a playwright and fiction writer. Recently he has turned to making collages from an array of materials: paper, wood, glass, metal, paints, photographs, found objects and word texts.
Goold comments on his work: "So many people flow through our lives. A documentary informs that the average person living today will meet more people in a year than his or her grandparents did in their lifetime. Yet how many people ever reveal their true nature to us? It takes but a fraction of a second to read a face but faces lie because all of us go about in a particular 'role', and for that we need a 'mask' of normalcy appropriate for the role. Even to our intimates - friend, lover, spouse - we often remain on guard for it is taboo in our society to let our true nature be revealed. I am fascinated with what lurks behind these public faces, those feelings or subconscious desires which must be repressed if society is to function. How close to the edge might some people be if we saw what was below the surface of a smile? These photo-collages are rendered to depict individuals with their usual identities peeled away. With undulations of layers of supplied newspaper and through the manipulation of the images, some slight, some grossly misappropriate, the inner and outer tension of each subject is released in unexpected ways."
