Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Horance Farlowe & John T. Hall
Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, announces an exhibition of recent work by noted Southern artist Horace Farlowe. A selection of both new oil paintings on canvas and stone sculpture will be on exhibit through Nov. 17. In conjunction with this exhibition, Somerhill Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of recent work by noted photographer and Hurdle Mills, NC native, John T. Hall.
Horace Farlowe
Farlowe is recognized primarily for his large-scale stone sculpture. Combining abstract and classical elements, Farlowe's work is immediately recognizable. Most of the sculptural work employs smooth, curvilinear, stone abstract or geometric elements juxtaposed against formal, classical, sculptural elements, such as columns or arches.
In addition to his sculpture, Farlowe will exhibit a selection of abstract paintings on canvas. Bold colors and energetic application of paint charge these surfaces with vigor and vitality. Farlowe's paintings combine multiple layers of shape and color to create a resonating glow and depth. The surface appearance is enriched by exposure of the underpainted color and texture.
Farlowe is a native of North Carolina and currently a resident of Georgia where he is Professor Emeritus in the University of Georgia Art Department. He received his BS in painting from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC and his MA in sculpture from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. His travel and research carries him to such diverse locations as Scotland, Zimbabwe, and Italy.
In 1994, Farlowe was awarded a state of NC commission to create a complex marble sculptural installation for the NC Zoological Park. In 1997, Farlowe created a polished black granite water sculpture for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Gardens in Raleigh. In 2000 he was awarded a commission by the city of Wilson, NC, for a large outdoor marble water sculpture. Most recently Farlowe was selected to create an outdoor granite sculpture for the Museum of Texas Tech University at Lubbock.
Farlowe's work is exhibited extensively - both nationally and abroad - at such venues as the University of Georgia, Tulane University, the Fayetteville Museum of Art, Fayetteville, NC, Palazza Casali at Cortona, Italy, the University of Stiriling and Kildrummy Castle, both in Scotland.
John T. Hall's exhibition celebrates the recent publication of the book DESIGNING WOMEN: Interiors by Leading Style Makers (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2001), the fifth book to feature Hall's work. During the opening reception, patrons will have a unique opportunity to meet Hall and to have their copies of the book (available for sale at the gallery) signed by him.
Hall is one of the country's foremost contemporary photographers; his work is frequently featured in books and periodicals. Hall lives and works in New York City.
